Fishing Report
Lake of the Woods and the Rainy River
March 08, 2010
The Walleye Capital of the World
Lake of the Woods is a whirl of activity as anglers visit for their end season ice fishing adventures. Ice houses are permitted on the lake until the end of March, weather permitting, but the walleye season does not end until April 14th.
The Northwest Angle and Islands report ice depth at 32 inches and many active walleyes in 23-28 feet of water. Snowmobile trails are in good condition and there is a 30-36 inch snow base. Temperatures are above normal for this time of year so please call ahead for your accurate conditions and reservations.
On the south shore, walleye and sauger action has been good in 32-35 feet of water. Lots of good eating size walleyes around 18 inches are coming through and numerous slot walleyes showing up between 19.5-28 inches are being released. While many houses are still 20 plus miles out on the lake, there is a movement back into shallower water depths which is normal for this time of year. . Northern action has also picked up. Remember this season does not close on Lake of the Woods. A report of a 40 and 41 inchers were landed this past week. So come and try your luck using tip-ups and enjoying the great sunshine on the beautiful lake.
